Artificial Colors
Artificial colors or synthetic dyes are widely used as colorants in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications to primarily enhance appearance of the finished products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the use of artificial colors as food additives.
This agency established the principle of FD & C (food, drug, and cosmetic) colorants which are known as “Certified Colorants”. This certification is mandatory and FDA is in charge of performing applicable tests. By certifying the colorant, FDA allows its use in foods and assures a higher standard of purity than those available for other industrial uses.
