Introduction to Food Ingredients

Food processors have thousands of chemicals they can add to foods we eat. According to the Food Protection Committee of the National Academy of Sciences, which evaluates the safety of food ingredients, each of these chemicals used in food processing targets one or more of the following goals:

  • enhance quality or consumer acceptability
  • improve nutritional value
  • make the food more readily available
  • improve the keeping quality
  • facilitate its preparation

Types of Food Ingredients

In addition to Flavors, Colors and Enzymes other food ingredients include:
